Origin Story
A bare-backed rescue hen standing in golden afternoon light, the feathers on her back worn away โ€” the moment that started Roost
February 2019

Meet Hazel โ€” the hen who started everything.

She came to us a rescue, bare-backed and shivering through a Kansas winter. We couldn't find a single apron that fit right. So we made one.

"I just needed one apron that fit a Buff Orpington. Six months later, I was shipping to fourteen countries."
Margot Haines, founder of Roost

The first one

Sewn on a kitchen table at 11pm, pattern traced from a paper bag. Hazel wore it the next morning without complaint.

First county fair ribbon

A 4-H family from Ohio sent us a photo. Their Cochin wore a Roost jacket to the judging table and took home best-in-show.

Chapter Three

The flock photos started pouring in.

From suburban backyards in Austin to a schoolyard coop in Vermont โ€” customers began sending portraits of their girls in their Roost aprons. We put every single one on the wall. It's still there.
